Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins Announces Long List of Prominent Supporters in Final Weekend of Re-Election Campaign

(WESTCHESTER)—New York State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins launched her extensive Get Out The Vote (GOTV) operations over the weekend, the final phase of the campaign leading up to Election Day, with the strong support of New York’s top Democratic leaders for her re-election.  She has received dozens of endorsements from organizations listed on her website: www.andreastewartcousins.com, as well as from her colleagues and partners in government. “Andrea Stewart-Cousins has challenged the status quo and has achieved real results that provide tax relief for working families,” said Attorney General and Gubernatorial Candidate Andrew Cuomo.

Senator Chuck Schumer said, “As a State Senator, Andrea Stewart-Cousins has been a champion for Westchester. She has voted for a property tax cap twice to protect taxpayers, fought to restore and expand STAR, and led the fight to win seven hundred million dollars in federal funds for our schools.”

"Andrea Stewart-Cousins has been a fierce leader for Westchester families and tireless advocate for the middle class,” stated U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.  “We can count on Andrea Stewart-Cousins to stand up for Westchester taxpayers, and that's why I am proud to endorse her for re-election."

NYS Comptroller Tom Dinapoli said, “Andrea and I have worked together to make government more efficient, more responsive and more responsible.  Together, we will continue to lead our State’s effort for achieving fiscal reform and stimulating economic recovery. The Journal News' Recommendation for the 35th District State Senate Seat
October 21, 2010

Andrea Stewart-Cousins, who has represented the 35th state Senate district since 2006, acknowledges that there is more work to be done in Albany. No one could argue with her. The next Legislature must address property tax relief, serious state-budget problems and sundry reform issues.

Stewart-Cousins, a former Westchester County legislator, has been at work on these and other critical issues while simultaneously paying close attention to the diverse needs and challenges in her district, which spans the very rich and poor, in Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Elmsford, Greenburgh, Hastings-on-Hudson, Irvington, Mount Pleasant, Pleasantville, Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown and parts of Yonkers. We endorse her bid for a third term.
Voters ended GOP control of the Senate in 2008, putting Democrats in charge for the first time in nearly 45 years. Stewart-Cousins became chair of the Senate's Local Government Committee, in which role she introduced and passed legislation better enabling municipal consolidations and sharing of services between governmental units. The measure gives local voters perhaps their best chance at streamlining municipal government.

Stewart-Cousins can take credit for a bill that allows municipalities to seek cooperative health plans for employees, share highway and personnel services, and to enjoy greater flexibility in purchasing contracts. On the reform front, Stewart-Cousins has supported measures to improve transparency in the Senate, among them the recent decision to webcast floor sessions and hearings. She voted twice to enact a property-tax cap — it would not apply to Yonkers and the other big-city school districts. She said she would support similar measures in the next session.
Challenger Liam McLaughlin, Republican and Conservative, told us that Albany is broken and that the state is imperiled because of high taxes and out-of-control spending. In the past two years, Albany has relied on a combination of spending cuts and tax and fee increases to close multibillion-dollar deficits. About 8,000 state jobs have been cut through attrition in the past two years.

A certified public accountant who works as an estate attorney in White Plains, McLaughlin served 10 years on the Yonkers City Council, retiring at the end of 2009. During that service, he chaired the Budget, Environmental Policy and Protection, Municipal Operations, Legislation and Codes and Franchise committees.

McLaughlin is running on what he says is a record of cutting taxes and encouraging economic development in Yonkers. Going back many years, Yonkers officials have consistently turned to Albany for special assistance, usually to bail out the schools. State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli's office has been especially critical of the city's budget practices, including runaway spending on police overtime — evidence that some dysfunction is local.

Stewart-Cousins also has the Independence and Working Families lines on the Nov. 2 ballot.

With her support and guidance, the Sierra Club has recently worked with the Senator to pass the notification bill to prevent the deforesting in our region and hold utility companies accountable. The Sierra Club enthusiastically endorses Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins for reelection and is grateful for her leadership in the conservation and protection of New York State’s environment,” said Gerri Currall, Political Co-Chair of the Sierra Club’s Lower Hudson Group.

Since then, she has helped shape critical legislation regarding recycling, climate change, pesticides and especially clean energy,” said Nanette Bourne, Chair of the New York League of Conservation Voters Westchester Chapter. “Andrea Stewart-Cousins knows that environmental sustainability is not a luxury reserved only for the good times; she believes, as we do, that a healthy environment and a strong economy go hand in hand. That’s why we are proud to endorse Andrea Stewart-Cousins for re-election to the New York State Senate.”

Earlier this week, EPL/Environmental Advocates gave Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins a score of 82, the tenth highest score given to any member in the NYS Senate. “When it comes to the preservation of our environment, it is critical that protections are in place before irrevocable damage occurs and the impact is felt in our community,” said Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins (35th District – NY). “In passing Green Jobs, Green Markets and the Bigger, Better Bottle Bill, steps continue to be taken to protect our environment, as well as to prepare New York for an economy of the future. Mount Pleasant Democrats Endorse Andrea Stewart-Cousins for State Senate

(MT. PLEASANT, NY) – Today, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins received another affirmation of support, this time from the Mt. Pleasant Democratic Party. This announcement comes just after announcing the support of the Yonkers and Greenburgh Democratic Party organizations last week.

“The current economy has dealt a harsh blow to all New Yorkers.  Employment opportunities, real estate taxes, and concerns about health care and personal safety need to continue to be addressed.  As a former Mayor of the Village of Sleepy Hollow, a mother of two teenagers and a practicing attorney in Westchester County, I have observed first-hand the challenges we all face on a daily basis just to keep our heads above water.  We need a Senator representing us in Albany who ‘gets it.’  We need a Senator representing us in Albany who will initiate legislation to provide access to health care, to strengthen small businesses, to hold public utilities accountable and to assist local governments,” said Mt. Pleasant Democratic Committee Chair Janet Gandolfo.  “Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins has done all of this for us.  We need Senator Stewart Cousins representing us in Albany.  She ‘gets it.’”
